Bound in 19thc. three-quarter blue leather and boards, gilt ruled with ornaments at corners. Boards rubbed, corners bumped. Rare: Four copies in North America: Getty, Yale, Michigan State, Lehigh.

Illustrated with a double-page plate of the exterior of the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome, decorated for the funeral rites; an architectural plan of the church, with the footprint of the enormous catafalque in the nave; four full-page plates of emblems, and an enormous folding plate of the church interior, festooned with heavy draperies and lit with a multitude of candles, and with the monumental catafalque, supported by skeletons, designed by the Sicilian architect and stage designer Filippo Juvara (1678—1736).

Fine copy internally. Title lightly toned and with tiny ink spot, occ. minor spotting, light browning to edge of large plate where the sheets were joined, small closed tear on final leaf.

A very rare book commemorating the obsequies held at Rome in the church of San Luigi dei Francesion Sept. 18, 1711 forLouis of Bourbon, Dauphin of France, son of Louis XIV and Maria Teresa von Hapsburg. Louis died of smallpox on April 11thof that year.All plates are engraved by Giovanni Girolamo Frezza (1659-1741). The large folding plate is particularly impressive.
